Ralph Hudnall, AHAM’s Director of Product Certification and Verification, Discusses the AHAM Verifide Program

Ralph Hudnall is AHAM’s Director of Product Certification and Verification and is responsible for the development and operation of the AHAM Verification Programs for room air cleaners, dehumidifiers, room air conditioners, refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers and freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers. Ralph recently sat down to discuss how consumers can benefit from using the AHAM Verifide database when looking to purchase an appliance as well as purchasing an appliance with the AHAM Verifide mark.

“The biggest advantages for the consumer when looking at an AHAM Verifide product is that the consumer can feel confident that the product will perform according to the energy and size claims that are shown on the product marketing materials and the yellow EnergyGuide label. Consumers can use this information to help choose the appliance that meets their needs, and if the goal is to find a highly efficient appliance, the information found though the AHAM Verifide Programs can lead to an appliance which will save in utility bills. All products are randomly selected and tested by an independent laboratory,” Ralph said. He explained that US government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are involved in the product selection process and may request that specific models be tested. Ralph noted that consumers can benefit from a free directory which is downloadable that includes a list of all AHAM Verifide appliances.

“Before consumers go to the store, the directories can be a tool to help them narrow down their choices. They can use the directories to choose which parameters they need, such as BTUs in the case of room air conditioners,” he says. “When they go to the store, they’ve been able to narrow down the list of models they want to look at and aren’t overwhelmed. Also, the consumer knows that an independent lab has verified the rating claims. The AHAM Verifide mark provides an added layer of assurance that a product will in fact work the way it is claimed to work.” Consumers can view the online directories at www.AHAMVerifide.org.
